Atomic Wallet is a non-custodial multi-cryptocurrency wallet application available on desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) and mobile (iOS, Android). Launched in 2017 by Konstantin Gladych (also co-founder of Changelly), Atomic Wallet supports over 500 coins and tokens and provides built-in exchange functionality, staking for proof-of-stake assets, and fiat-to-crypto purchasing.
The wallet stores private keys locally on the user's device, encrypted and derived from a 12-word mnemonic seed phrase. Atomic Wallet integrates third-party exchange services to enable in-app token swaps and has historically offered a cashback rewards program through its native AWC token.
In June 2023, Atomic Wallet suffered a significant security breach in which an estimated $35-100 million in user funds were stolen across multiple blockchains. The attack, which blockchain analytics firm Elliptic linked to the North Korean Lazarus Group, affected a small percentage of the wallet's user base but raised serious questions about the wallet's security architecture. Multiple class-action lawsuits were filed against Atomic Wallet in the aftermath. The company disputed some of the reported loss figures but acknowledged the incident and stated it was working with blockchain analytics firms and law enforcement to trace the stolen funds. The incident remains one of the largest non-custodial wallet exploits in cryptocurrency history.
