Gemini is a cryptocurrency exchange and custodian founded in 2014 by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. Headquartered in New York City, Gemini operates as a New York trust company regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), positioning itself as one of the most compliance-focused crypto platforms in the United States.

Gemini offers spot trading, a mobile app, an ActiveTrader platform for advanced users, a crypto-backed credit card, staking services, and institutional custody solutions. The exchange supports dozens of cryptocurrencies and provides fiat on-ramps and off-ramps in US dollars.

In 2018, Gemini launched the Gemini Dollar (GUSD), one of the first regulated stablecoins in the United States. GUSD is backed 1:1 by US dollars held in FDIC-insured accounts and is subject to regular independent audits.

Gemini faced significant challenges during the 2022 crypto downturn. Its Gemini Earn product, operated in partnership with Genesis Global Capital, was frozen when Genesis halted withdrawals in November 2022. Gemini reached a settlement in 2024 that returned funds to affected Earn users. The company has since refocused on its core exchange and custody business and has expanded internationally, obtaining regulatory licenses in multiple jurisdictions.
