Jesse Powell is the co-founder of Kraken, one of the oldest and largest cryptocurrency exchanges. He led the company as CEO from its founding in 2011 through September 2022.

Kraken

Powell founded Kraken in 2011 after visiting the offices of Mt. Gox following a major hack and becoming convinced the industry needed a more secure, reliable exchange. Kraken launched to the public in 2013 and grew into one of the world’s leading crypto exchanges, known for strong security practices, deep liquidity, and a wide range of trading pairs.

Kraken was appointed by the Tokyo District Court to assist in the Mt. Gox bankruptcy proceedings, handling the distribution of claims for the defunct exchange’s creditors.

Under Powell’s leadership, Kraken expanded globally, added futures and staking products, and maintained a reputation as one of the few major exchanges never to suffer a major security breach.

Transition to Chairman

In September 2022, Powell stepped down as CEO, transitioning to the role of Chairman of the Board. Dave Ripley, Kraken’s former COO, succeeded him as CEO.

Controversy

Powell has been an outspoken advocate for free speech and has publicly clashed with regulators and cultural norms in the tech industry. His management style and public statements have drawn both praise from libertarian-leaning crypto advocates and criticism from others.
