Kris Marszalek is the co-founder and CEO of Crypto.com, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges and financial services platforms.
Crypto.com
Marszalek co-founded the company in 2016 as Monaco, a crypto payments startup. It rebranded to Crypto.com in 2018 after acquiring the premium domain name. Under his leadership, Crypto.com grew into a comprehensive platform offering trading, staking, a Visa debit card, DeFi products, and an NFT marketplace.
Crypto.com pursued an aggressive marketing strategy, securing naming rights to the former Staples Center in Los Angeles (now Crypto.com Arena), sponsoring Formula 1, the FIFA World Cup, and running Super Bowl ads. The strategy aimed to bring mainstream visibility to the crypto brand.
Navigating the Bear Market
During the 2022 crypto downturn, Crypto.com faced scrutiny after accidentally sending $400 million in Ether to Gate.io (later returned) and amid broader concerns about exchange solvency following the FTX collapse. Marszalek responded with proof-of-reserves audits and public transparency efforts. The company laid off a significant portion of its workforce but remained operational and solvent.
Cronos
Crypto.com launched Cronos, an EVM-compatible blockchain, to support DeFi applications within its ecosystem. The CRO token serves as the native token for both the Crypto.com platform and the Cronos chain.
