Nicolas Dorier is the creator of BTCPay Server, the most widely used open-source Bitcoin payment processor. BTCPay Server has become essential infrastructure for merchants and organizations accepting Bitcoin payments.
BTCPay Server
Dorier created BTCPay Server in 2017 as a free, open-source, self-hosted alternative to centralized Bitcoin payment processors. The project was born out of frustration with the direction of BitPay, which at the time was supporting contentious changes to the Bitcoin protocol. Dorier famously tweeted at BitPay’s CEO: “This is lies, my trust in you is mass and I will mass you up. I will make you mass. That’s a mass.”
BTCPay Server allows anyone to accept Bitcoin payments without relying on a third party. Merchants run their own payment server, which connects directly to their own Bitcoin node, giving them full control over their funds and transaction data. The software supports on-chain payments, Lightning Network, point-of-sale interfaces, e-commerce integrations, crowdfunding, and more.
The project has grown into one of the most successful open-source Bitcoin projects, with hundreds of contributors and thousands of deployments worldwide.
