OpenSea is the largest and most well-known marketplace for non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Founded in December 2017 by Devin Finzer and Alex Atallah, OpenSea pioneered the concept of a general-purpose NFT trading platform, supporting digital art, collectibles, gaming items, music, domain names, and other tokenized assets.
During the NFT boom of 2021 and early 2022, OpenSea became one of the most valuable startups in the crypto space, processing billions of dollars in monthly trading volume and reaching a $13.3 billion valuation in a January 2022 funding round led by Paradigm and Coatue. At its peak, OpenSea dominated NFT trading with the vast majority of market share.
The broader NFT market experienced a dramatic decline beginning in mid-2022, and OpenSea's trading volumes fell significantly from their peaks. The company faced increased competition from rivals including Blur, which attracted traders with a token incentive model and lower fees. In response, OpenSea reduced fees, introduced optional creator royalty enforcement, and restructured its team.
OpenSea supports NFTs across multiple blockchains including Ethereum, Polygon, Solana, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, and others. The platform provides tools for creating, listing, buying, and selling NFTs, as well as collection analytics and portfolio management features. OpenSea is headquartered in New York City.
