Paolo Ardoino is the CEO of Tether, the company behind USDT — the world’s largest stablecoin by market capitalization and the most traded cryptocurrency by volume.
Tether
Ardoino served as Tether’s CTO before being named CEO in December 2023. Under his leadership, USDT has grown to over $140 billion in market capitalization, making it the dominant stablecoin globally. USDT is particularly widely used in emerging markets and for cross-border payments, processing more daily transfer volume than many traditional payment networks.
Bitfinex
Ardoino also served as CTO of Bitfinex, the cryptocurrency exchange closely affiliated with Tether. Bitfinex and Tether share common ownership and management, which has been a source of ongoing scrutiny.
Controversies and Transparency
Tether has faced persistent questions about its reserves — whether USDT is fully backed by dollar-equivalent assets. In 2021, Tether settled with the New York Attorney General’s office, paying $18.5 million and agreeing to periodic reserve disclosures after the NYAG found that Tether had misrepresented the backing of USDT at various times. Tether has since published quarterly attestation reports and claims full backing by U.S. Treasuries, cash, and cash equivalents.
Despite the controversies, Tether has been consistently profitable — reporting billions of dollars in annual profit from interest earned on its reserve assets — and USDT’s market dominance has continued to grow.
Vision
Ardoino has positioned Tether as more than a stablecoin company, expanding into Bitcoin mining, AI infrastructure, and peer-to-peer communications technology (Holepunch/Keet).
