Rusty Russell is a Lightning Network protocol developer at Blockstream and one of the principal authors of the Lightning Network specification. He is a veteran open-source developer with decades of contributions to the Linux kernel.

Lightning Network

Russell is one of the core architects of the Lightning Network protocol specification (BOLTs — Basis of Lightning Technology). He leads development of Core Lightning (formerly c-lightning), Blockstream’s implementation of the Lightning Network. His work on the protocol specification has been foundational to how Lightning channels are opened, managed, and closed across all Lightning implementations.

Core Lightning

Core Lightning is the most modular and developer-friendly Lightning implementation, designed with a plugin architecture that allows developers to extend its functionality. Under Russell’s leadership, it has served as a reference implementation for the Lightning specification and a testbed for new protocol features.

Linux Kernel

Before Bitcoin, Russell was a prominent Linux kernel developer for over a decade. He contributed to the netfilter/iptables firewall framework, the virtio virtualization standard, and other core kernel subsystems. His experience building critical infrastructure for Linux directly informed his approach to Lightning Network protocol design.

Background

Russell is based in Adelaide, Australia. His combination of deep systems programming expertise and protocol design skills has made him one of the most respected technical contributors in the Bitcoin ecosystem.
