Silvio Micali is a Turing Award-winning cryptographer, MIT professor, and the founder of Algorand.

Academic Career

Micali is a professor of computer science at MIT, where he has been on the faculty since 1983. His research contributions to cryptography are foundational — he co-invented zero-knowledge proofs (with Shafi Goldwasser and Charles Rackoff), verifiable random functions, and made fundamental contributions to the theory of computation, pseudorandom generation, and secure protocols.

In 2012, Micali received the Turing Award (often called the “Nobel Prize of computing”) jointly with Shafi Goldwasser for their transformative work in cryptography. Their co-invention of zero-knowledge proofs — a concept that allows one party to prove knowledge of a fact without revealing the fact itself — became foundational technology in blockchain privacy and scaling solutions decades later.

Algorand

Micali founded Algorand in 2017 to apply his cryptographic expertise to build a blockchain that solves the “blockchain trilemma” — achieving security, scalability, and decentralization simultaneously. Algorand uses Pure Proof-of-Stake (PPoS) with a novel committee selection mechanism based on verifiable random functions (VRFs) to achieve fast finality and high throughput.

Algorand launched its mainnet in June 2019. The platform has attracted institutional and governmental use cases, including El Salvador’s blockchain infrastructure and Marshall Islands’ digital currency pilot.

Legacy

Micali is one of the most credentialed academics to have founded a blockchain project, bringing decades of foundational cryptographic research to applied blockchain design.
