What Is Aster?

Aster (ticker ASTER) is a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures and spot trading, formed from the merger of Astherus, a multi-asset liquidity protocol, and APX Finance, a decentralized perpetuals protocol. The unified platform relaunched under the Aster brand in 2025 and now also runs Aster Chain, its own privacy-focused Layer 1. Note that Aster is unrelated to Astar Network (ASTR), the Polkadot-ecosystem smart contract chain; the similar names cause frequent confusion.

Aster operates across BNB Chain, Ethereum, Solana, and Arbitrum without requiring users to bridge funds. It offers several trading modes: a simple one-click mode with MEV protection and leverage up to 1001x, a pro mode with a full order book, grid trading, and hidden orders that stay invisible until execution, plus perpetual markets on stocks and commodities alongside crypto. An earn suite offers products like asBNB liquid staking and the USDF yield stablecoin. Total value locked stood around 800 million dollars in mid-2026.

Aster Chain, the project's Layer 1, launched its mainnet genesis phase in March 2026 after a testnet that opened to whitelisted users in December 2025 and to the public in January 2026. It targets derivatives trading with proof-of-staked-authority consensus, 50-millisecond blocks, zero gas fees, and on-chain order matching. Its distinguishing feature is privacy: zero-knowledge verifiable encrypted orders, one-time stealth addresses, and a "viewer pass" system for selective disclosure to auditors and regulators. External validators are not yet supported in the first phase.

The team is anonymous and includes former Binance employees. YZi Labs (formerly Binance Labs) holds a minority stake, and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao serves as an advisor on product and technology, a role he has publicly stressed is advisory only. The ASTER token launched on September 17, 2025, with a maximum supply of 8 billion: 53.5 percent to airdrops, 30 percent to ecosystem and community (including the APX token conversion), 7 percent treasury, 5 percent team and advisors with multi-year vesting, and 4.5 percent for liquidity. APX holders could convert to ASTER 1:1 in the first swap cycle, with the ratio declining in later cycles. In June 2026 Aster upgraded its tokenomics so that 99 percent of daily platform fees buy back ASTER for veASTER stakers, with matching burns intended to shrink total supply from 8 billion toward 3 billion.

Aster's rise has been controversial. In October 2025, DefiLlama delisted Aster's perpetuals volume data after its co-founder observed that Aster's reported volumes almost perfectly mirrored Binance's, raising wash-trading concerns the project disputed; volume figures from that period should be treated as self-reported. The same month, its second airdrop phase was briefly delayed over data inconsistencies in allocations for some of the roughly 154,000 qualifying wallets, amid community complaints about bot farming. ASTER reached an all-time high of $2.41 a week after launch and traded around $0.63 in mid-2026.

Getting Started With Aster

The ASTER token is a BEP-20 on BNB Chain, and the exchange works with standard EVM wallets:

  1. Step 1: Set up an EVM wallet such as MetaMask, Rabby, or Binance Wallet, with a little BNB for gas.
  2. Step 2: Connect to the Aster DEX, which also supports email login, and deposit funds on a supported chain.
  3. Step 3: Trade perpetuals in simple or pro mode, or swap on the spot market.
  4. Step 4: Acquire ASTER to stake for veASTER fee-sharing and governance, including spot-listing votes.

Latest Aster News

Aster Chain's mainnet entered its genesis phase in March 2026, beginning a phased rollout that adds public ASTER staking, ecosystem programs, and eventually external validators, with real-world asset markets and governance on the 2026 roadmap. In June 2026 the project overhauled its tokenomics, directing 99 percent of platform fees into ASTER buybacks for veASTER stakers with matching burns targeting a long-term supply of 3 billion; the first buyback cycle completed at the end of June.

Aster remains one of the largest perpetual DEXes by reported volume, though the wash-trading questions raised during the 2025 DefiLlama dispute still color how analysts read its numbers. The documentation and official X account are the best sources for Aster Chain's rollout status and tokenomics changes.
