What Is Axie Infinity?

Axie Infinity (ticker AXS) is a blockchain-based game in which players collect, breed, raise, and battle fantasy creatures called Axies. Each Axie is a non-fungible token (NFT) that the player truly owns and can trade. Axie Infinity is the project that popularized the "play-to-earn" model, in which players earn tradable crypto tokens through gameplay rather than just spending money on a game.

The game was created by Sky Mavis, a studio founded in Vietnam and led by CEO Trung Nguyen, with co-founders including Aleksander Larsen and Jeffrey "Jihoz" Zirlin. Ronin lets players trade Axies and tokens with near-instant, very low-cost transactions, which was essential when Ethereum mainnet fees were too high for frequent in-game actions. Ronin has since grown into a broader gaming network hosting other titles beyond Axie Infinity.

In March 2022, the Ronin network suffered one of the largest crypto hacks ever, when attackers later attributed to the North Korea-linked Lazarus Group drained over 600 million dollars from the Ronin bridge. Sky Mavis reimbursed affected users, rebuilt the bridge with stronger security and more validators, and Ronin has operated steadily since, rebuilding trust over the following years.

Sky Mavis has worked to evolve Axie Infinity beyond the original play-to-earn loop, which proved hard to sustain economically, toward a model that emphasizes fun gameplay first. This includes reforms to the SLP economy, new game modes, and the development of Atia's Legacy, a more traditional massively multiplayer game set in the Axie universe.
