What Is Gala?

Gala (ticker GALA) is a blockchain-based entertainment platform whose goal is to give players and fans real ownership of their digital items. It began with blockchain gaming under the name Gala Games and has since expanded into music and film, with all three sharing a common token and infrastructure. The aim is to let users own in-game assets, music NFTs, and other digital content as tokens they control rather than entries in a company's private database.

Gala was founded in 2019 by Eric Schiermeyer, a co-founder of the major social-gaming company Zynga, alongside other partners. Drawing on his background in mainstream gaming, Schiermeyer set out to build games people would enjoy regardless of the blockchain element, while using blockchain to give players ownership. Over time the company grew into a broader entertainment ecosystem encompassing Gala Games, Gala Music, and Gala Film.

The technical backbone of the ecosystem is GalaChain, Gala's own blockchain, designed for entertainment and enterprise use and built to handle the assets across Gala's games and media. Gala opened GalaChain's software development kit to outside developers in early 2024, broadening who can build on the network. GalaChain is supported by a large ecosystem of operator nodes, including a capped set of 50,000 Founder's Nodes, whose operators help run the network and earn GALA rewards in return.

GALA is the platform's native utility token. It is used to pay for items and transactions across Gala's games and media platforms, to buy and sell NFTs in its marketplaces, and to reward node operators who help secure and operate the ecosystem. GALA originated as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and is also used natively on GalaChain.

In May 2023, Gala upgraded its token from the original GALA (v1) to a new GALA (v2) contract, with holders' tokens converting one-to-one. The new contract improved security and burn mechanics and set the stage for the GalaChain era. Gala's games library has included titles such as Town Star, Spider Tanks, Mirandus, and Legacy.

Gala has also weathered significant turbulence. In 2023, a high-profile legal dispute erupted between co-founder Eric Schiermeyer and another co-founder over control and alleged misappropriation of tokens. The dispute was eventually settled, but it weighed on the project and its token, and it remains part of Gala's recent history.

Getting Started With Gala

Getting started with Gala usually means creating an account and acquiring GALA:

  1. Step 1: Create a Gala account, which provides a built-in wallet for the ecosystem, and secure your login.
  2. Step 2: Acquire GALA on an exchange, or connect an Ethereum wallet like MetaMask that holds GALA.
  3. Step 3: Explore Gala Games, Gala Music, and Gala Film, and buy or earn items as NFTs.
  4. Step 4: Advanced users can run a node to help operate GalaChain and earn rewards.

How to Get a Gala Wallet?

Gala provides its own ecosystem wallet, and GALA is also a standard ERC-20 token, so external Ethereum wallets work too.

Gala Account Wallet

When you create a Gala account, you get a built-in wallet for holding GALA and the NFTs you use across Gala Games, Music, and Film. It is the most convenient option for using the ecosystem directly.

MetaMask

MetaMask is the most widely used Ethereum wallet and can hold the ERC-20 GALA token, which you can then connect to or transfer into the Gala ecosystem.

Hardware Wallets

A Ledger device can be paired with MetaMask to keep your private keys offline, which is recommended for larger GALA holdings.

How to Buy Gala?

GALA can be bought on both centralized and decentralized exchanges.

Centralized Exchanges

GALA is widely listed on exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit, and Gate, typically traded against USD or USDT.

Decentralized Exchanges

As an ERC-20 token, GALA can be bought on Ethereum decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap by connecting a wallet and swapping from ETH or a stablecoin. Gala also operates its own platform, GalaSwap, for trading within the ecosystem.

Latest Gala News

Gala's recent focus has been on building out GalaChain as the foundation for its games and media, expanding its node ecosystem, and adding new titles and entertainment offerings across Gala Games, Music, and Film. Having moved past its 2023 internal legal dispute, the company has worked to stabilize and grow the platform around its own chain.

GALA remains the connective token across the ecosystem, used for payments, marketplaces, and node rewards. Because game lineups, node economics, and tokenomics change over time, the official website, the GalaChain site, and Gala's X account are the best sources for the current state of the project.
