What Is Gate Token?

Gate Token (GT) is the native utility token of Gate, one of the longest-running cryptocurrency exchanges. GT powers trading fee discounts, VIP tier benefits, and Startup launchpad access on the exchange, and it serves as the gas token for GateChain (the company's Layer 1) and Gate Layer (its Layer 2 launched in 2025). It is one of the more actively burned exchange tokens: a genesis burn set an initial 300 million cap, and a long-running quarterly buyback-and-burn program has continued to reduce the maximum supply ever since.

The exchange behind GT was founded in April 2013 by Lin Han, originally under the name bter.com. The platform rebranded to Gate.io in 2017 after expanding internationally, and underwent another major brand upgrade in April 2025 (its 12th anniversary), unifying its products under the master brand "Gate" with gate.com as the primary domain. Lin Han, a Peking University computer science graduate, remains the sole founder and CEO. The story of how the exchange came to be is widely retold: Lin Han discovered Bitcoin in the early 2010s, lost a significant amount to a scammer, and decided to build a more trustworthy trading venue.

GT itself launched in April 2019 as the platform's utility asset. It was originally issued with a 1 billion total supply, but 700 million tokens were burned at genesis, setting an initial maximum supply of 300 million GT. Unlike burns that only reduce circulating supply, Gate's quarterly burns reduce the maximum supply itself, so the cap keeps falling each quarter. A portion of the exchange's revenue is committed to ongoing buybacks, and the company publishes quarterly on-chain burn reports. By mid-2026 the maximum supply had fallen to roughly 143 million GT, with total supply around 119 million and circulating supply around 107 million.

Holding GT unlocks tiered trading fee discounts on Gate's spot and derivatives markets, accelerates VIP level upgrades, and provides eligibility for Startup launchpad and HODLer airdrops. GT can also be staked for on-chain governance and rewards. Beyond the exchange, GT is the native gas asset on GateChain, an EVM-compatible Layer 1, and on Gate Layer, an EVM Layer 2 launched in September 2025 in which GT is the exclusive gas token.

GT is multi-chain. It is native to GateChain and Gate Layer, and an ERC-20 wrapper exists on Ethereum at the contract address 0xE66747a101bFF2dBA3697199DCcE5b743b454759, which is what is listed on most external exchanges and trading venues. The deepest GT liquidity sits on Gate itself, but the ERC-20 version is also tradable on a number of other centralized and decentralized venues.

As with other exchange tokens, GT's value is closely tied to the underlying business: spot and derivatives trading volume, fee revenue, Startup launchpad activity, and the growth of GateChain and Gate Layer all feed back into demand for the token. Gate has continued to expand globally, obtaining a MiCA license in the European Union via its Gate.MT entity, and reported a sharp jump in trading volume across 2024 and 2025.

Getting Started With Gate Token

The most direct way to use GT is on the Gate exchange and across the Gate ecosystem:

  1. Step 1: Create and verify a Gate account at gate.com.
  2. Step 2: Acquire GT directly on Gate using fiat or by trading other cryptocurrencies for it.
  3. Step 3: Hold GT in your account to qualify for trading fee discounts, VIP tier upgrades, and Startup eligibility.
  4. Step 4: Optionally bridge GT to GateChain or Gate Layer to use it as a gas asset on those networks.
  5. Step 5: For long-term holding, withdraw GT to a self-custody wallet such as the Gate Wallet, MetaMask (for the ERC-20 version), or a hardware wallet.

Gate frequently runs HODLer airdrops and Startup launchpad events that reward GT holders, so following Gate's official announcements is useful for active participants.

How to Get a Gate Token Wallet?

GT exists natively on GateChain and Gate Layer, and as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Wallet choice depends on which version you hold:

Gate Wallet

Gate Wallet is the official self-custody wallet, with first-class support for GT on GateChain, Gate Layer, and Ethereum. It also includes built-in swaps and staking.

MetaMask

MetaMask supports GT as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, and can be configured with custom RPCs to interact with GateChain and Gate Layer. Add the appropriate token contract for the network you are using.

Trust Wallet

Trust Wallet is a popular multi-chain mobile wallet that supports GT on Ethereum out of the box.

Hardware Wallets

Ledger hardware wallets support GT on Ethereum via integrations with MetaMask or the Gate Wallet. Hardware wallets are strongly recommended for larger long-term holdings.

Gate Account Wallet

Holding GT on Gate itself is required to access exchange-side benefits including trading fee discounts, VIP upgrades, and Startup launchpad eligibility. Many users keep a portion on Gate and a portion in self-custody.

How to Buy Gate Token?

GT has its deepest liquidity on Gate itself, with secondary listings on a number of other venues:

Gate

The most direct way to buy GT is on Gate. Trading pairs include GT/USDT, GT/USDC, and GT against other major assets, and Gate supports direct fiat-to-GT purchases in many regions through its on-ramp partners.

Other Centralized Exchanges

GT is listed on additional centralized exchanges including KuCoin, MEXC, Bitget, and BitMart. Liquidity outside Gate is generally thinner, so check spreads and order book depth for larger trades.

Decentralized Exchanges

The ERC-20 version of GT is available on Uniswap and other Ethereum DEXs, where on-chain liquidity pools exist. DEX liquidity is typically thinner than on Gate itself, but DEXs are useful for self-custody holders who prefer to swap without touching a centralized exchange.

After purchasing, consider keeping a portion of GT on Gate for fee discounts and Startup eligibility, and a portion in a self-custody wallet such as Gate Wallet or a hardware wallet for long-term storage.

Latest Gate Token News

A consequential recent development for GT was the April 2025 brand upgrade, in which Gate.io unified its product suite under the master brand "Gate" and adopted gate.com as its primary domain. Around the same period, Gate launched Gate Layer, an EVM-compatible Layer 2 in which GT is the exclusive gas token, broadening the token's on-chain utility beyond the exchange itself. On the infrastructure side, GateChain shipped a consensus upgrade in September 2025 adding Ethereum Cancun compatibility and EIP-4844 blob transactions, followed by additional developer tooling and a further Gate Layer version upgrade in early 2026.

The quarterly buyback-and-burn program has continued into 2026, with roughly 2.56 million GT destroyed in the Q1 2026 burn (April 2026) and about 2.57 million GT in the Q2 2026 burn (July 2026). Because these burns reduce the maximum supply, GT's cap has continued to trend down toward the ~143 million level. Gate has also published a 2026 proof-of-reserves report citing a 125% reserve ratio; as with any exchange-published attestation, holders may wish to review the underlying report directly.

In July 2026, a verified Gate user reported that roughly $1.7 million was drained from their account despite having two-factor authentication and email alerts enabled. Gate initially characterized the activity as user-initiated with no systemic breach before reversing course, apologizing, and promising an investigation; public reporting indicates the funds were not returned. Coverage described this as an individual account compromise rather than a hack of the exchange itself, but it was followed by roughly $207 million in net outflows over the subsequent week as some users moved funds. This account rests on a single outlet's reporting at the time of writing.

Gate has also continued to grow globally, securing a MiCA license in the European Union through its Gate.MT entity and expanding licensing in additional jurisdictions. As with other exchange tokens, GT's trajectory remains tightly linked to the exchange's competitive position and reputation, the success of GateChain and Gate Layer, and the ongoing pace of buybacks and burns. Following Gate's official channels is the most reliable way to stay current on token-relevant developments.
