What Is Hyperlane?

Hyperlane is an open-source, permissionless interoperability framework that lets blockchains send messages, tokens, and governance actions to one another. Rather than being a single fixed bridge, Hyperlane is a generalized message-passing layer that any developer can deploy to any chain without asking for permission or waiting for a central team to approve it. It connects more than 150 blockchains across roughly seven different virtual machine environments, and the project cites over $10 billion in value bridged through it.

The protocol was built by Abacus Works, the core development company behind Hyperlane. It was originally launched under the name Abacus and rebranded to Hyperlane in the fall of 2022. The founding team includes Jon Kol, who serves as chief executive of Abacus Works, along with Asa Oines and Nam Chu Hoai. Oines and Chu Hoai were both founding engineers at Celo, and they brought that infrastructure background to the design of Hyperlane's cross-chain stack.

Technically, Hyperlane centers on a smart contract called the Mailbox that is deployed on each connected chain. An application on a source chain dispatches a message to the Mailbox, which emits it for off-chain agents called relayers to carry to the destination chain. Security is enforced by Interchain Security Modules (ISMs), a configurable system that lets each application choose how its messages are verified, for example by a set of validators or by other proof systems. This modular design is what makes Hyperlane permissionless: because security is configurable rather than fixed, anyone can extend the network to a new chain on their own.

On top of this messaging core, Hyperlane offers several products. Warp Routes are a framework for bridging assets between chains, letting projects move existing tokens or issue tokens that exist natively across multiple networks. The same messaging layer supports interchain governance, where a protocol can execute decisions across several chains, and general-purpose messaging for any application that needs to read or trigger actions on another chain. Nexus is Hyperlane's own bridge interface built on Warp Routes.

The HYPER token is Hyperlane's native asset, with a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. HYPER is used to secure the protocol through staking, where participants stake to back validators and the economic security of the network. As of mid 2026, roughly 338 million HYPER are in circulation, about 34 percent of the maximum supply, giving the token a market capitalization of around $24 million. Because only about a third of the supply is circulating, future scheduled unlocks are a meaningful factor for anyone evaluating the token, since additional supply is set to enter circulation over time.

Hyperlane raised an $18.5 million seed round in September 2022, led by Variant, with participation from Galaxy, CoinFund, Circle Ventures, and Kraken Ventures. The token generation event and airdrop took place around April 22, 2025, with a claim window running from April 22 to May 22 and a listing on Binance. The initial distribution allocated roughly 57 percent of supply to the community, about 25 percent to the team, and around 11 percent to investors, with the remainder to other categories. No hacks or exploits of the Hyperlane protocol have been publicly reported.

Hyperlane competes in the same broad category as interoperability protocols like LayerZero, Axelar, and Wormhole. Its distinguishing feature is its permissionless model: most competing systems require a central team to add support for a new chain, while Hyperlane is designed so that any developer can self-serve deploy it wherever they want. This has made it a common choice for newer chains and rollups that want interoperability from day one without depending on a third party's roadmap.

Getting Started With Hyperlane

Most people encounter Hyperlane indirectly, through applications and bridges that use it under the hood. To interact with it more directly, whether to move assets or to hold the HYPER token, the following steps are a useful starting point:

  1. Step 1: Set up a self-custody wallet such as MetaMask that supports Ethereum and other EVM chains where HYPER and Warp Route assets live.
  2. Step 2: Fund your wallet with a small amount of the native gas token for the chain you plan to use, so you can pay transaction fees.
  3. Step 3: Visit the Nexus bridge to move assets across supported chains using Hyperlane's Warp Routes, connecting your wallet and selecting the source and destination networks.
  4. Step 4: If you want to help secure the network, review the official staking option and the documentation before committing any HYPER.

How to Get a Hyperlane Wallet?

HYPER is deployed as a token on Ethereum and several EVM-compatible chains, including Arbitrum, Base, BNB Smart Chain, and Optimism. Because it lives in the EVM ecosystem, standard Ethereum-compatible wallets are the right fit for holding it.

MetaMask

MetaMask is the most widely used wallet for Ethereum and EVM chains. It supports HYPER on Ethereum and on the other EVM networks where the token is deployed, and it connects easily to Hyperlane's Nexus bridge and other Web3 applications. You may need to add the token contract address manually to see your balance.

Rabby

Rabby is a multi-chain EVM wallet that automatically detects the network you are interacting with, which is convenient when moving assets across the many chains Hyperlane connects. It supports the same EVM networks where HYPER is available.

Hardware Wallets

Ledger and similar hardware wallets can hold HYPER by pairing with MetaMask or Rabby. Keeping the token on a hardware device is recommended for larger holdings or long-term storage, since the private keys stay offline.

How to Buy Hyperlane?

HYPER is available on both centralized and decentralized exchanges. Before buying, confirm you have the correct token, since the ticker HYPER (Hyperlane) is different from HYPE (Hyperliquid), which is a separate project.

Centralized Exchanges

HYPER debuted on Binance around its April 2025 token generation event and is listed on several major centralized exchanges. Trading pairs are typically quoted against stablecoins such as USDT. Always verify the token contract and listing details on the exchange before trading.

Decentralized Exchanges

Because HYPER is deployed on Ethereum and other EVM chains, it can be traded on decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap where liquidity pools exist. When using a DEX, paste the official token contract address rather than searching by name, to avoid impostor tokens that reuse the HYPER ticker.

Latest Hyperlane News

The most significant recent milestone for Hyperlane was the launch of the HYPER token in April 2025, which introduced staking-based economic security to the protocol and distributed a majority of supply to the community through an airdrop. Since then, the team has continued expanding the number of connected chains, which now exceeds 150, and has promoted its permissionless model as a way for new rollups and appchains to gain interoperability without central gatekeepers.

Through 2025 and into 2026, Hyperlane has focused on its Nexus bridge and Warp Routes for asset transfers, alongside interchain governance tooling. With roughly a third of the token supply circulating, the schedule of future unlocks remains a point of attention for holders, as additional HYPER is set to enter the market in the years ahead. Prospective participants should review the official documentation and the foundation's disclosures for the latest details on tokenomics and staking.
