What Is Jupiter?

Jupiter is the dominant decentralized exchange aggregator on Solana, responsible for routing the majority of DEX trading volume on the network. Founded by a pseudonymous team led by "Meow" and "Ben," Jupiter aggregates liquidity from dozens of Solana DEXs and AMMs to find the best swap rates for users. It has expanded well beyond simple token swaps into a comprehensive DeFi platform.

At its core, Jupiter works by splitting and routing trades across multiple liquidity sources simultaneously. When a user wants to swap token A for token B, Jupiter's routing algorithm considers all available paths across Solana's DEXs — including Raydium, Orca, Phoenix, Lifinity, and many others — and executes the trade through the combination of routes that provides the best price. This often means a single swap is split across multiple DEXs and intermediate tokens to minimize price impact and slippage.

Jupiter has expanded its product suite to include:

  • Swap aggregation: The core product routing trades across 20+ Solana DEXs for optimal pricing.
  • Limit orders: Users can place limit orders that execute automatically when a target price is reached.
  • DCA (Dollar-Cost Averaging): Automated recurring purchases that split a large buy into smaller periodic swaps.
  • Perpetual trading: Jupiter Perps offers leveraged perpetual futures trading powered by oracle-based pricing and an LP pool model.
  • Jupiter LFG Launchpad: A token launch platform where JUP holders vote on which new projects get to launch.
  • Jupiter Lock: A token vesting and locking tool for project teams.

JUP is the governance token of Jupiter, launched in January 2024 through one of the largest Solana airdrops. JUP holders participate in governance votes, including deciding which projects launch on the LFG Launchpad and voting on protocol parameters. The Jupiter DAO actively governs the platform's direction and treasury.

Jupiter's dominance on Solana is significant — it often routes over half of all Solana DEX volume. This central role in Solana's DeFi stack, combined with Solana's growth as a leading blockchain ecosystem, has made Jupiter one of the most important DeFi protocols in the industry.

Getting Started With Jupiter

Using Jupiter for token swaps on Solana:

  1. Step 1: Set up a Solana wallet such as Phantom, Solflare, or Backpack.
  2. Step 2: Fund your wallet with SOL (needed for gas fees) and any tokens you want to swap.
  3. Step 3: Visit the Jupiter web app, connect your wallet, select tokens, and execute swaps.
  4. Step 4: Explore additional features like limit orders, DCA, or perpetual trading.

Jupiter charges no platform fees on basic swaps — users only pay Solana network fees (fractions of a cent) and normal DEX fees on the underlying liquidity sources.

How to Get a Jupiter Wallet?

JUP is a Solana SPL token stored in any Solana wallet:

Phantom

Phantom is the most popular Solana wallet and provides seamless access to Jupiter. Available as a browser extension and mobile app, it supports all Solana tokens and dApps.

Solflare

Solflare is another popular Solana wallet with native support for Jupiter and the broader Solana DeFi ecosystem.

Hardware Wallets

Ledger hardware wallets support Solana and can be connected through Phantom or Solflare for secure transaction signing on Jupiter.
