What Is Linea?
Linea (ticker LINEA) is a zkEVM Layer 2 rollup that scales Ethereum. It was developed by Consensys, the software company behind MetaMask and Infura, and is designed to be closely aligned with Ethereum: it uses ETH for gas and aims for full compatibility with Ethereum's tooling and smart contracts. LINEA is its native token.

Linea launched its mainnet in 2023. It is a type-2 zkEVM, meaning it aims for bytecode-level equivalence with the Ethereum Virtual Machine so that existing Solidity contracts and tools such as MetaMask and Hardhat work without modification. This makes it straightforward for Ethereum developers to deploy applications on Linea.
Technically, Linea batches transactions on its Layer 2 and generates zero-knowledge validity proofs, which are posted to Ethereum for settlement. The core stack includes a sequencer that orders transactions and builds blocks, a prover that produces the zero-knowledge proofs, a coordinator that orchestrates the components, and smart contracts on Ethereum. As with other rollups in their early phases, Linea currently relies on a Consensys-operated sequencer and prover, with a stated roadmap toward decentralization.
ETH is the only gas token on Linea; there is no separate token needed to pay fees. In late 2025 Linea introduced a dual-burn mechanism that applies to network transactions: after infrastructure costs are covered, a portion of net ETH fees is burned as ETH and the remainder is used to buy back and burn LINEA on Ethereum. This makes both assets deflationary as the network is used. Linea also introduced a native yield feature that stakes bridged ETH to route staking rewards back into the ecosystem.
The LINEA token has a total supply of roughly 72 billion. Its distribution follows an unusual, Ethereum-aligned model with no allocation to the team, private investors, or venture capital. The large majority of the supply is dedicated to the ecosystem, including a user airdrop and a long-lived ecosystem fund overseen by the Linea Consortium, whose members include ENS Labs, Eigen Labs, Status, and Consensys. A minority of the supply is held by Consensys under a multi-year lock. LINEA is not a governance token.
Getting Started With Linea
Using Linea means bridging onto the network and connecting an EVM wallet:
- Step 1: Set up an EVM wallet such as MetaMask, which is developed by the same company as Linea.
- Step 2: Bridge ETH to Linea, for example through the official Linea bridge.
- Step 3: Use Linea applications, paying gas in ETH, and swap for LINEA on a Linea DEX if you want to hold the token.
- Step 4: Explore the Linea ecosystem of DeFi and other applications.
How to Get a Linea Wallet?
LINEA is an EVM token, so any wallet that supports Ethereum and Linea will work.
MetaMask
MetaMask is a natural fit for Linea, since both are built by Consensys. It can be configured for the Linea network to hold LINEA and interact with Linea applications.
Rabby
Rabby is a DeFi-focused wallet with multi-chain support and transaction previews, and it works well with Linea applications.
Hardware Wallets
A Ledger device can be paired with MetaMask or Rabby to keep your keys offline, which is recommended for larger holdings.

How to Buy Linea?
LINEA can be bought on centralized exchanges or on Linea itself.
Centralized Exchanges
LINEA is listed on exchanges including Binance, OKX, Bybit, and HTX, typically against USDT.
Decentralized Exchanges
As an EVM Layer 2 token, LINEA trades on decentralized exchanges within the Linea ecosystem. Bridge ETH to Linea, connect an EVM wallet, and swap into LINEA.
Latest Linea News
Linea's token generation event and airdrop took place in September 2025, distributing tokens to eligible users with no allocation to the team or investors. In November 2025 the dual-burn mechanism went live, tying both ETH and LINEA supply reduction to network activity. Earlier, in 2024, Linea drew attention for pausing its sequencer in response to an exploit on a third-party application, a decision that highlighted the centralized "training wheels" stage that many young rollups pass through.
