What Is Midnight?
Midnight (ticker NIGHT) is a privacy-focused blockchain that describes itself as a data-protection network. Rather than making everything anonymous, Midnight aims for what it calls rational privacy: transactions and application data are shielded by default, but users and businesses can selectively disclose specific facts to authorized parties, proving something is true without exposing the full record behind it. Midnight is the first partner chain of Cardano and launched its mainnet in late March 2026.

Midnight was unveiled by Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson at IO ScotFest in November 2022 after several years of research at Input Output. Development is led by Shielded Technologies, a spinout of Input Output headed by chief executive Eran Barak, a former chief operating officer of Symphony. A separate Midnight Foundation, launched in May 2025 and led by president Fahmi Syed, stewards the network's growth. The public testnet opened in October 2024, and the mainnet genesis block was produced on March 30, 2026.
Technically, Midnight uses zk-SNARK zero-knowledge proofs and a dual-ledger architecture that separates public coordination from confidential execution. Developers write smart contracts in Compact, a TypeScript-based language, which lowers the barrier for mainstream developers to build privacy-preserving applications. Its transaction protocols build on the Kachina research from Input Output and the University of Edinburgh. The mainnet launched in a "guarded era" run by nine federated operators, including Google Cloud, MoneyGram, Worldpay, Bullish, eToro, and Blockdaemon, with a roadmap that hands block production to Cardano stake pool operators and eventually the wider community.
Midnight uses an unusual dual-token model. NIGHT is the unshielded capital asset with a fixed supply of 24 billion, used for governance and validator rewards. Holding NIGHT automatically generates DUST, a shielded, non-transferable resource that pays transaction fees. DUST regenerates like a recharging battery and decays when unused, and because it is shielded, paying fees does not publicly expose the payer's wallet. DUST fee mechanics activate in phases on the 2026 roadmap.
NIGHT was distributed through one of the broadest airdrops in crypto history. In the Glacier Drop, with a claim window from August to October 2025, about 3.5 billion NIGHT was claimed by holders of ADA, BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, BNB, AVAX, and BAT, followed by a Scavenger Mine phase open to anyone with a CPU. Tokens were generated on Cardano on December 4, 2025, with claimed tokens unlocking in quarterly installments over roughly a year. The claim process drew community complaints, including a Ledger hardware wallet incompatibility that required a workaround, and the majority of the 24 billion supply sits with the foundation, reserve, and treasury, a point critics have noted alongside the federated launch model.
Getting Started With Midnight
NIGHT is a Cardano native asset, so getting started runs through the Cardano ecosystem:
- Step 1: Set up a wallet that supports NIGHT, such as Lace or another Cardano wallet.
- Step 2: Acquire NIGHT on an exchange and withdraw it to your wallet, or redeem tokens if you claimed the Glacier Drop.
- Step 3: Holding NIGHT generates DUST over time, which pays for transactions on the Midnight network as fee mechanics go live.
- Step 4: Explore privacy-preserving applications as the ecosystem's 100+ announced partners deploy on mainnet.
How to Get a Midnight Wallet?
Because NIGHT lives on Cardano, mainstream Cardano wallets support it. The official token page lists several options.
Lace
Lace is Input Output's own light wallet and the most directly integrated option for NIGHT and the Midnight ecosystem.
Yoroi
Yoroi is a long-running Cardano light wallet available as a browser extension and mobile app that can hold NIGHT as a native asset.
NuFi and GeroWallet
NuFi and GeroWallet are multi-feature Cardano wallets listed on Midnight's official token page as supported options.

Latest Midnight News
Midnight's mainnet went live on March 30, 2026, launching in a guarded, federated phase operated by nine institutions including Google Cloud, MoneyGram, and Worldpay. The 2026 roadmap moves the network through Cardano stake pool operator onboarding, activation of the DUST fee system and staking rewards, and eventually open community block production. More than 100 ecosystem partners are positioned to deploy applications, and UK-based Monument Bank has announced plans to tokenize retail deposits on Midnight.
The NIGHT token debuted on exchanges in December 2025 with heavy volatility, selling off on its first day of trading before recovering sharply and roughly doubling within days. Unclaimed Glacier Drop tokens remain available through a lost-and-found process running for five years from launch. The official website, documentation, and X account are the best sources for the network's current decentralization phase and DUST activation status.
