What Is Orca?
Orca (ticker ORCA) is a decentralized exchange (DEX) built on the Solana blockchain. It launched in February 2021 as one of the first general-purpose automated market makers (AMMs) on Solana, and it set out to make decentralized trading feel approachable: simple swaps, clear pricing, and a friendly, whale-themed interface. Today Orca is best known for Whirlpools, its concentrated-liquidity pools, and it stands alongside Raydium as one of the two dominant AMMs on Solana.

Orca was co-founded by Yutaro Mori and Grace Kwan, who built the protocol from Tokyo, Japan. Mori is a software engineer who previously worked on Ethereum 2.0 and smart contracts at UMA, while Kwan, known in the community as "Ori," combined engineering with product design experience from IDEO and Coursera. The pair initially operated pseudonymously as "YM" and "Ori" before revealing their identities in mid-2021. In September 2021 Orca raised an $18 million Series A from investors including Polychain, Placeholder, Three Arrows Capital, and Coinbase Ventures.
The ORCA token launched on August 9, 2021, with a hard-capped maximum supply of 100 million tokens, a portion of which was airdropped retroactively to early users of the protocol. The initial allocation was split among liquidity mining and trader rewards, the team and advisors, a treasury, and a small public sale. All allocations finished vesting in 2024, so the token is fully unlocked. ORCA is a governance token: holders (and stakers of xORCA, which carries boosted voting power) can submit and vote on proposals through the Orca DAO, which directs protocol upgrades, parameter changes, and treasury spending.
Orca's signature product is Whirlpools, a concentrated liquidity market maker (CLMM) that entered beta in March 2022 and opened to the public that April. Like Uniswap v3 on Ethereum, Whirlpools let liquidity providers concentrate their capital within a chosen price range instead of spreading it from zero to infinity. Liquidity that sits closer to the market price earns a larger share of trading fees, which means deeper liquidity and lower slippage for traders. Pool creation on Orca is permissionless, so anyone can spin up a pool for any token pair, and a large share of Solana swap volume reaches Orca's pools through aggregators such as Jupiter.
One notable chapter in Orca's history came in March 2023, when the team announced that the United States would be added to the list of regions restricted from trading on the orca.so web interface, effective March 31, 2023. The decision, made amid rising US regulatory pressure on crypto, applied only to the website front end; the underlying smart contracts remained permissionless, and US users could still provide liquidity through the site or interact with the protocol directly and through integrators.
In October 2024 Orca expanded beyond Solana for the first time, going live as the primary DEX on Eclipse, an Ethereum layer-2 network that executes transactions with the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) and uses Celestia for data availability. The move lets Orca bring its concentrated-liquidity trading to Ethereum-aligned users while keeping the speed and low fees of the SVM.
Getting Started With Orca
Getting started with Orca usually means trading or providing liquidity on the DEX, holding ORCA, or both:
- Step 1: Set up a Solana wallet such as Phantom, Solflare, or Backpack, and back up your seed phrase securely.
- Step 2: Fund the wallet with some SOL to pay transaction fees, then acquire ORCA on an exchange or swap for it on Solana.
- Step 3: Connect your wallet to the Orca app to swap tokens or open a liquidity position in a Whirlpool and earn trading fees.
- Step 4: Stake ORCA for xORCA and take part in Orca DAO governance by discussing and voting on proposals.
How to Get an Orca Wallet?
ORCA is an SPL token on Solana, so any major Solana wallet can hold it and connect to the Orca app.
Phantom
Phantom is the most widely used Solana wallet, available as a browser extension and mobile app. It can hold ORCA, swap tokens, and connect directly to Orca's web app.
Solflare
Solflare is a long-running Solana wallet with browser, mobile, and web versions, plus built-in staking and token management features.
Backpack
Backpack is a newer Solana-native wallet with a clean interface and built-in support for the broader Solana app ecosystem.
Hardware Wallets
A Ledger device can be paired with Phantom or Solflare to keep your private keys offline, which is recommended for larger holdings.

How to Buy Orca?
ORCA trades on both centralized and decentralized exchanges.
Centralized Exchanges
ORCA is listed on major exchanges including Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, KuCoin, and Gate, typically traded against USD or USDT. Note that the orca.so web interface itself restricts trading for users in the United States and certain other regions.
Decentralized Exchanges
The most direct route is on Solana itself: ORCA can be swapped on Orca's own pools or through the Jupiter aggregator, which routes trades across Solana DEXes for the best price.
Latest Orca News
Orca has kept shipping through Solana's resurgence. In July 2025 it released Wavebreak, a "human-first" token launchpad that pairs CAPTCHA checks with onchain permissions to keep bots and snipers from crowding out real users during new token launches. The protocol has also added permissioned pools aimed at regulated real-world-asset distribution, and its xORCA staking and DAO governance framework continues to mature.
With Solana leading all chains in DEX trading volume in 2025, Orca remains one of the network's foundational AMMs, alongside Raydium, and serves as the primary DEX on the Eclipse layer-2. Because volumes, pool incentives, and supported features change quickly, the official website, documentation, and governance forum are the best sources for the current state of the protocol.
