What Is PIVX?
PIVX (Private Instant Verified Transaction) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that launched on February 1, 2016, originally as a fork of DASH called Darknet (DNET) before rebranding to PIVX to better reflect its core mission. Built on the Bitcoin Core 0.10.x codebase with DASH's masternode model, PIVX had no premine and no ICO — coins used to start the chain were publicly burned. The project is community-governed and operates as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). PIVX was one of the first projects to implement Proof of Stake consensus with integrated privacy features, pursuing the goal of creating a fast, private, and decentralized payment cryptocurrency.

PIVX uses a Proof of Stake 3.0 consensus mechanism that eliminates the coin-age factor found in earlier PoS designs, meaning users must keep their wallet online continuously to maximize staking rewards rather than accumulating idle coins. The network also supports masternodes, which require locking 10,000 PIVX as collateral and provide additional network services including SwiftX (originally SwiftTX) instant transactions, which are confirmed and spendable within seconds through masternode consensus. Block rewards are distributed between stakers and masternode operators through a see-saw reward mechanism that dynamically adjusts the split based on the ratio of coins staked versus coins locked in masternodes, keeping both network security and service availability balanced.
Privacy on PIVX has evolved through multiple phases. The project initially used an obfuscation mixing system based on CoinJoin, facilitated by the masternode network. It then implemented zPIV, a zerocoin protocol integration that allowed users to mint and spend coins with cryptographic anonymity. zPIV was later replaced by the SHIELD protocol, based on the Sapling privacy technology originally developed for Zcash. SHIELD enables shielded transactions where the sender, receiver, and amount are hidden from public view on the blockchain. Users can choose between transparent transactions and shielded transactions depending on their privacy needs. PIVX was the first Proof of Stake cryptocurrency to implement Sapling-based privacy.
PIVX governance operates through a proposal system where masternode operators vote on budget proposals submitted by community members. A portion of each block reward is allocated to a treasury that funds approved proposals for development, marketing, community initiatives, and other purposes. This self-funding mechanism allows PIVX to sustain development without relying on external funding or a central foundation. The governance model gives each masternode one vote, and proposals must reach a net positive threshold to be funded from the monthly budget cycle.
Getting Started With PIVX
- Step 1: Learn About PIVX. Visit pivx.org to understand PIVX's privacy features, Proof of Stake consensus, masternode system, and community governance model.
- Step 2: Download the PIVX Wallet. Install the PIVX Core wallet from the official website. The wallet provides full functionality including staking, shielded transactions, and governance participation.
- Step 3: Acquire PIVX. Purchase PIVX on a supported exchange and transfer to your wallet. You need PIVX for transactions, staking, and potentially running a masternode.
- Step 4: Stake or Run a Masternode. Stake any amount of PIVX by keeping your wallet online to earn staking rewards. If you hold at least 10,000 PIVX, you can run a masternode to earn larger rewards and participate in governance voting.
How to Get a PIVX Wallet?
PIVX Core Wallet
The official PIVX Core wallet is a full-node desktop wallet available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It includes all features: staking, SHIELD privacy transactions, masternode management, and governance voting. The wallet has a modern, user-friendly interface.
PIVX Mobile Wallet
A lightweight mobile wallet is available for managing PIVX on iOS and Android. It supports sending, receiving, and basic wallet management for everyday use.
Ledger Hardware Wallet
PIVX is supported on Ledger hardware wallets for cold storage. Note that staking requires an online wallet, so hardware storage is best for coins you want to keep secure without staking.
