Storj was founded by Shawn Wilkinson and John Quinn and is developed by Storj Labs, a company based in Atlanta, Georgia. The project began in 2014, and an early version of its token, SJCX, ran on the Counterparty protocol built on top of Bitcoin. In 2017, Storj held a token sale that raised roughly 30 million US dollars and migrated to the ERC-20 standard on Ethereum, where the STORJ token has lived since.
