Charles Hoskinson is the founder of Cardano and the CEO of Input Output Global (IOG, formerly IOHK). He is also a co-founder of Ethereum.

Ethereum

Hoskinson was one of eight co-founders of Ethereum in 2013–2014. He briefly served as CEO of the Ethereum project but departed in June 2014 following disagreements with Vitalik Buterin and other co-founders over whether Ethereum should be a for-profit or non-profit venture.

Cardano and IOG

In 2015, Hoskinson co-founded Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK, now IOG) with Jeremy Wood. Through IOG, he created Cardano, a proof-of-stake blockchain platform that takes a research-driven, peer-reviewed approach to protocol development. Cardano’s Ouroboros consensus protocol was developed through formal academic papers published in peer-reviewed cryptography conferences.

Cardano has consistently ranked among the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. The platform rolled out smart contract functionality with the Alonzo hard fork in September 2021 and has continued development through subsequent upgrades.

Approach

Hoskinson is known for his methodical, academic approach to blockchain development, which prioritizes formal verification and peer-reviewed research over rapid iteration. Critics argue this approach has slowed Cardano’s development relative to competitors, while supporters credit it for producing more reliable and secure infrastructure.

Public Presence

Hoskinson is one of the most active and visible figures in crypto, frequently livestreaming on YouTube and engaging directly with the Cardano community. He operates a ranch in Colorado and has spoken about interests ranging from mathematics and formal methods to agriculture and beekeeping.
