Mayer was among the first popular bloggers to publicly recommend Bitcoin when its market cap was under $2 million, well before its rise to mainstream awareness. He made early investments in Bitcoin companies including BitPay, Armory, and Kraken.

Proof of Keys
In 2019, Mayer initiated “Proof of Keys” day (January 3, the anniversary of Bitcoin’s genesis block), encouraging Bitcoin holders to withdraw their coins from exchanges to personal wallets. The annual event promotes self-custody and helps verify exchange solvency — a concept that proved prescient after the FTX collapse in 2022.
