Video - Bitcoin Q and A Politics and Counter-Economics

December 29, 2016

The politics of Bitcoin. Counter-economics. Politics is a conversation about how best to organise society. Contrary to what they want you to believe, it is not a conversation you can only have if you're an elected official wearing a blue/ red coloured pin, or participate in once every four years.

They want us to think that politics is the dirty business of choosing the lesser evil of two awful candidates who will mess up the lives of our neighbours who voted for the wrong one. That's tribalism and we don't need that. We're having a conversation about governance right now, without casting any votes or electing anyone. We are engaging in it every day. Creating local organisations and communities of people helping each other is the most powerful form of politics we have. Don't vote - code.

[AUDIENCE] From a perspective of defending and increasing freedom, should we even care about politics, or just focus on counter-economics? Live on and buy bitcoin, etc. What do you think? Do politics matter?

Why or why not? [ANDREAS] The question was, should we care about politics or should we focus on building [alternatives]. That is politics. What I am doing here is about politics.

Politics is a conversation about how to organize society. It is not a conversation you can only have as an elected official, or only participate in once every four years. It is not a conversation you can only participate in by wearing blue or red colored pins, though... that is what they want us to think politics is.

They want us to think politics is the dirty business of deciding between two terrible choices every four years.. so they can mess up the life of our neighbor, who we didn't like anyway and supported the wrong candidate. That is not politics, that is tribalism played out in governance. We don't need that.

Politics is a society having a conversation about governance. We are doing that right here. We didn't cast any votes. I certainly wasn't elected, but this is politics.

We are engaging in politics every day. Local organization, creating community... that is valuable to other people, and helping each other is the most powerful form of politics we have. Don't vote, code.
